About

It all started after spending a few weeks with my grandmother last year. Her greatest joy is spending time in the garden and it was contagious. We planted and pruned. She would look at a dead plant and proclaim that it would return in the spring. It was amazing to me. I realized that everything she knew about gardening she learned from her mother and that these skills were passed down through the generations. They are my history and part of who I am. These are skills that are lost on my generation. It clicked. I went home and promptly built my raised garden.

I am a city girl. My little "homestead" is located in Tucson, AZ. I started this blog to document and share my experiences in the garden, preserving food, conserving energy and water, and making things by hand. To me, this is urban homesteading. I want to live simply and encourage my kids to learn how to grow their own veggies. I want to pass down the knowledge that I almost missed out on. This is a sentimental journey for me.

The definition of homesteading has been debated and discussed at length on various websites, blogs and forums. There are many folks who follow a purist path — off the grid and living as one with the Earth. Some people worry about society's oil dependency or prepping for economic collapse. Other folks, like myself, simply grow their own food. Whatever your path, I hope that you can appreciate that I am a newbie.

Share your own stories and advice in the comments section. I'd love to hear from you.

Enjoy the journey and thanks for visiting!
